Weekly Meetings
One of the most important things we do for our boys is feed them before each and every meeting begins. The sharing of food is symbolic and integral to the program. For all of the boys, food is communal, settles them down and prepares them to focus, participate and contribute. For some, this is the only meal of the day. A few chapters receive local grants for food, and the foundation look after the rest. With 15 chapters and hundreds of boys in the Network, food costs are notable. We very much appreciate donations of funds to assist with feeding the boys, and also in-kind commitments by community partners, to provide healthy meals throughout the school year. Every little bit helps. Thank you for your consideration.
Summer Camp
We operate regional summer camps in four BC school districts. Camps generally run Monday through Friday from 8:30am until 3:30pm, and include two meals, camp t-shirts, several field trips, special events, transportation, and several mentor-led meetings and events. Regional camps are designed to accommodate the availability and interests of boys in attendance, and range in duration from four to eight weeks. Cost is never a barrier to participation, and registration is offered free of charge to all families. For a select few boys, attendance at summer camp can represent the difference between continued success and failure to thrive, as camp offers continuation of critical connections made during the school year.
Scholarships
We are eternally grateful to BCIT for their continued support. Each year, they grant full academic or trade scholarships to qualifying BCN boys who have met our graduation requirements. BCIT staff continue to mentor these boys through successful completion of their chosen programs. BCN provides funds for books, laptop computer/printer/software suites, transit passes and other basics, to ensure that boys can participate fully in post secondary life. Boys who wish to attend other post secondary institutions require full or part scholarship funding, and possibly books, technology, transit and meal plans. Scholarship donations can be full or partial; earmarked for particular schools or programs; assigned based on need.
General
Sometimes, through circumstances alone, member boys lack the basic necessities of life that most people take for granted – a warm jacket, boots, bus fare, school activity fees, lunch, etc. In order to succeed in high school, and in life, youth need to be fed, warm, safe, supported and engaged. When these basic needs can’t be met traditionally, the Network advocates with modest purchases. The purchases are small, but their impact is huge. Examples include lunch cards, bus passes, textbook fees, academic testing and assessment fees, academic tutoring, extracurricular sports related fees and equipment, winter coats, shoes, boots, etc.
